Frequently asked questions

Is RefTake free?

Yes. The free plan is the full creative app, not a demo — record, auto-split, rate, tag, organize, and preview without limits. What Pro adds is export reach: on the free plan you pick one active Shot and can export it as often as you like, switching which Shot is active every 30 days, while Pro unlocks exports for every Shot in every project. Purchases are in-app and handled entirely by Apple — no account or sign-up involved.

What do I need to run RefTake?

An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later.

Do my recordings ever leave my device?

No. Everything you create stays on your device — RefTake has no servers, no accounts, and makes no network connections of its own, so it also works fully offline. See the privacy policy for the complete picture.

How safe is my footage in RefTake?

As safe as in Apple’s own Camera app — recordings are protected by the same iOS app sandboxing and device encryption. And in two ways safer: your work lives in RefTake’s own storage, completely separate from your family photos (nothing lands in the camera roll unless you export it there), and you can turn on the optional Face ID lock in RefTake’s settings so the app opens only for you.

How do I back up my work or move it to another device?

There are two layers. Automatic: everything in RefTake is included in your device’s normal iCloud (or computer) backup — RefTake never uploads footage anywhere itself, but with iCloud Backup turned on, a lost or replaced device restores with all your projects intact, encrypted under your Apple ID. Manual: export any project as a single .reftake file — it bundles references, templates, takes, ratings, tags, and notes — and import it on another iPhone or iPad to pick up right where you left off.

I deleted a take by accident — can I get it back?

Yes, for 30 days. Deleted items go to the in-app trash first (still only on your device) and can be restored with a swipe. After 30 days, or if you empty the trash yourself, they are gone for good.

What export formats does RefTake support?

Takes export as MOV video files or as JPEG/PNG image sequences, with tags and notes attached and filename formats you can customize to match your pipeline.
